Thomas Henry Bondtommybond

Born: 4/2/1856- Granard, Ireland

Died: 1/24/1941- Boston, Mass.

Tommy Bond makes his 2nd appearance in the DMB World Series, this time with the Boston Red Caps. Tommy started his career with the National Association Brooklyn Atlantics, and after 1 season he signed on with the Hartford Dark Blues. There he teamed up with fellow pitcher Candy Cummings and was said to have learned how to throw the curve ball from the self-appointed inventor of the curve. Tommy Bond was supposed to have proved to the skeptics that the ball did in fact curve by curving the ball around wooden stakes that had been hammered into the ground. He started the ball on one side of the stakes and it curved and finished on the other side.

In 1877 Tommy Bond won 40 games for the Red Caps, his 1st of 3 consecutive 40 win seasons. He became the 1st pitcher to win the pitcher’s Triple Crown: leading the league in wins, K’s and ERA. During his career he finished 95% of the games he started. Not surprisingly he retired at the age of 28 due to arm troubles.

After retiring he became a successful coach with the Harvard baseball team. When he died in 1841 he was the last surviving original member of the National League.

1877-The Year In Review

The 1877 season saw the National League with only 6 teams as the New York and Philadelphia teams were expelled from the League for failure to honor their schedule commitment.

Two rule changes of note: 1) Home plate was moved into fair territory, and 2) the fair-foul rule was amended to the current rule, stating that a batted ball will be ruled fair only if it passes over or inside 1st or 3rd base before going foul.

During the season Louisville held a 4 game lead over the Red Caps in the middle of August. They proceeded to lose 7 straight under suspicious circumstances to fall out of 1st, finishing the season in 2nd. place.

After the season, William Hulbert banned 4 Grays players for conspiring with gamblers to throw ball games. Cfer George Hall, Pitcher Jim Devlin, 3rd baseman Bill Craver and infielder Al Nichols would never again play in the NL. This would be the most egregious act in baseball until the infamous 1919 White Sox.

The Red Caps, Managed by Harry Wright won the League by 7 games, thanks to the pitching of new acquisition Tommy Bond, and the hitting of Deacon White, and Jim O’Rourke.

Because the Louisville team folded at the end of the season, and obviously were not playing to win this season, for obvious reasons, I decided to place the 3rd place Hartford team in this season’s World Series.

The Dark Blues actually agreed before the season started to play their home games in Brooklyn, but retained their Hartford moniker.

1876 World Series Game #6

Hartford Dark Blues vs. Chicago White Stockings 11/4/1876 @ 23rd Street Grounds

Back in Chicago and the fate of the White Stockings rests on the right arm of Al Goodwill Spalding. The Chicago offense needs to ignite as well. Their Game 4 outburst against Candy Cummings is the only game they managed more than 6 hits. Cap Anson takes an .045 avg. into this game, and League leading hitter Ross Barnes is hitting a paltry .100.

In the top of the 2nd the Dark Blues jumped on Al Spalding for 6 hits, all singles, and 4 runs, all earned, and this game was over. The Dark Blues would tack on another run in the 5th, and Tommy Bond would allow only 2 hits to easily wrap up this inaugural DMB World Series.

1876 World Series Game #5

Chicago White Stockings vs. Hartford Dark Blues 11/2/1876 @ Hartford Baseball Grounds

Once again Al Spalding will be called upon to get this series to a 7th game. He will be going against his Series nemesis, Tommy Bond. Can the White Stockings generate enough offense to beat this tough Dark Blues pitcher?

The game started with 6 shutout innings by both pitchers. In the 7th the White Stockings finally broke on top, after Deacon White singled(He always seems to be in the middle of all the White Stockings runs), stole 2nd, and continued to 3rd after an errant throw by the catcher. With the abundance of errors in this era, for obvious reasons(no gloves, inferior gloves, terrible field conditions etc) the DMB game engine seems fixated on making the majority of the catcher’s errors wild throws into center field. I’ve seen this play a thousand times,(Vinnie, if your reading this we both should never forget the majesty of a Billy Earle throw to 2nd!!!!) but it illustrates one of the difficulties of replaying games from the 18th century. A sac fly scored White to give the White Stockings one of their few leads in this Series.

White Stockings  1   Dark Blues  0 (7)

In the last of the 8th a 67 minute rain delay forced the removal of Tommy Bond. (Another problem with the DMB Engine. I should be able to over rule this decision.) This brought in Candy Cummings to pitch the 9th in a 1 run game. John Peters led of the inning with a single but moved into 2nd when the RFer misplayed the ball. A sac, and an infield groundout plated another run for the White Stockings.

White Stockings  2   Dark Blues  0 (9)

Bob Ferguson led of the last of the 9th with a triple, and later scored on a ground out. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs, Blues pitcher Candy Cummings smoked a line drive to 3rd for the final out of the game. Sending this Series back to Chicago.

1876 World Series Game #4

White Stockings vs Dark Blues 10/31/1876 @ Hartford Baseball Grounds

Since the Dark Blues have a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead in this best of 7 series, it was decided that Candy Cummings would take the hill for the Dark Blues to give Tommy Bond an extra day of rest. The White Stockings have no such luxury, they win or go home, and it would be up to Al Spalding to make sure that didn’t happen.

The Dark Blues once again struck first. After a leadoff double from shortstop Tom Carey, Al Spalding hurt his own cause by misfielding a ground ball, putting runners on the corners. A groundball out scored Carey, but Spalding was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Dark Blues  1   White Stockings  0 (1)

The White Stockings tied the score in the 4th. Left Fielder John Glenn orbited…..an infield single to lead off the inning. Al Spalding singled to put runners on the corners, and then the Dark Blues 3rd baseman booted a ground ball that allowed the tying run to score. Candy Cummings curved his way out of further trouble.

Dark Blues  1   White Stockings  1 (4)

There was no further scoring until the 6th when the White Stocking bats finally came to life. 3 singles in the inning plated 2 runs, 2 singles in the 7th scored another run, and 3 more single in the 8th scored 2 more.

White Stockings  6   Dark Blues  1 (8)

Al Spalding was touched up for 3 unearned runs in the final 2 innings, but it wasn’t enough as the White Stockings were able to stave off elimination, and a Dark Blues sweep.

Chicago White Stockings vs. Hartford Dark Blues 10/29/1876 @ Hartford Baseball Grounds

Al Spalding takes the hill once again against a very tough Tommy Bond and his 0.47 ERA after 2 games in the World Series.

In the 1st inning the Dark Blues scored an unearned run after an error and a 2 out single from Bob Ferguson.

Dark Blues  1   White Stockings  0 (1)

In the 2nd inning the White Stockings answered back with the long ball, when Deacon White drilled a 2-0 pitch into the right field stands for the 1st ever DMB World Series Home Run.

Dark Blues  1   White Stockings  1 (2)

In the 4th the White Stocking defense hurt Al Spalding, as Ross Barnes booted 2 ground balls at second, allowing 1 run to score, and an Ev Mills double drove in another run. That would be the last hit given up by Al Spalding, but once again the White Stocking offense could not find an answer for Dark Blues’ pitcher Tommy Bond as he won his 3rd game of this Series.

The Chicago White Stockings would have been very confident entering this World Series. After all they had the best hitting team in the league at .337, a mere 66 points higher than the #2 Philadelphia Athletics. Every starter hit over .300 led by Ross Barnes’ .429. They also had Al Spalding and his League leading 47 wins to go along with a rather stingy 1.75 ERA.

The Hartford Dark Blues were riding a season ending 9 game winning streak, helped by the best 2 man pitching staff in the League. Tommy Bond won 31 and Candy Cummings(The self proclaimed inventor of the curve ball) won 16. The offense hit .267 as a team, led by RFer Dick Higman’s .327.(The only starter to hit over .275)

The questions would be; Can the Dark Blues pitching contain the high flying White Stockings offense? And does Al Spalding have anything left after pitching 528.2 innings?

Game #1

Tommy Bond vs. Al Spalding @ Chicago’s 23rd Street Grounds 10/25/1876

In the 4th inning the Dark Blues would score the 1st ever DMB World Series run. A 2 out single by Jack Burdock would score Jack Remsen giving the Dark Blues a short lived 1-0 lead.

Dark Blues 1   White Stockings 0 (4)

In the bottom of the 4th Ross Barnes and Deacon White would both single and pull off a double steal that resulted in a run when Dark Blues catcher Doug Allison threw the ball into left field while attempting to gun down Barnes. Deacon White would later score on an rbi groundout.

White Stockings 2   Dark Blues 1 (4)

Al Spalding took a 3-1 lead into the 9th. With 1 out and a runner on 1st, third baseman Cap Anson fielded a ground ball and threw to second to start a game ending DP. His throw was wide and putting runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Dick Higman singled to load the bases. RFer Doug Addy dropped a fly ball that allowed 2 runs to score and tie the game at 3. The White Stockings would not score in their half of the 9th sending this game into extra innings.

Dark Blues 3   White Stockings 3 (9)

In the top of the 10th the Dark Blues scored with out the benefit of a hit. An error by 1st baseman John Glenn, a sacrifice, a ground ball and a passed ball put the Blues up by 1. In the last of the 10th, 3 Blues errors and a single could not score a run for the White Stockings, as a well timed double play stifled a potential rally, and gave the Dark Blues the game 1 victory

Ross Barnes Mini Biography

Filed under: Biography — Kevin Graham @ 3:14 pm

Each World Series will be preceded by a small biography of a key player rossbarnesparticipating in the upcoming Championship Series.

Charles Roscoe Barnes

B-5/8/1850  Mount Morris, Illinois
D-2/5/1915  Chicago, Illinois

When the National Association was formed, Harry Wright signed Ross Barnes to play for his Boston Red  Stockings in 1871.
He began his Major League career at the age af 21 and proved to be an outstanding player. Playing primarily 2nd base Ross won batting titles in 1872 and 1873.
At the end of the 1875 season Ross signed a contract with owner William Hulbert to play for his Chicago White Stockings of the newly formed National League.
Ross proceeded to lead his 2nd Major League in hitting to help the White Stockings to win the inaugural NL season Championship.
Ross is also credited with hitting the 1st HR in the National League.
Ross specialized in the "fair Foul" hit, hitting the ball into fair territory and banging it foul before it passed either the 1st or 3rd base bags.
The rule changed in 1877 and is often cited as the reason for his sudden decline in hitting. Ross actually missed 4 months of the 1877 season with an illness that was described as ague or fever, sapping him of most of his strength.
He missed the entire 1878 season and only managed to play 2 more seasons , one each with the Cincinnati Reds, and the Boston Red Caps.
Described by Al Spalding as " an ideal of a ballplayer who could be depended upon to perform with success any play requiring skill and immediate execution to win a game"
He is often tauted as one of the greatest second basemen of the 19th Century, and has been given some consideration for the Hall of Fame. But having played only 7 full seasons makes him a long shot for that honor.
Ross died in 1915 due to heart disease at the age of 64.

1876- The Year In Review

On Feb 2, 1876 a meeting took place in the Grand Central Hotel in NY with representatives from various professional baseball clubs. William Hulbert, President of the National Association Chicago White Stockings, called the meeting with the intent of forming the National League, thus setting the groundwork for the beginning of Major League baseball.

The new League would eliminate players from position of authority in League finances, inept leadership, player drunkenness, and the influence of gamblers at the ball field. The new League would not allow the sale of alcohol, Sunday games, or cursing on the field.

The 1st National League game took place on 4/22/1876. The Boston Red Caps faced the Philadelphia Athletics at Jefferson St. Grounds in Philadelphia, with the Red Caps winning by a score of 6-5.

The White Stockings led by Al Spalding, Ross Barnes, Cal McVey, and Cap Anson took 1st place by virtue of winning 52 games.

The Dark Blues led by the strong pitching of Tommy Bond and Candy Cummings placed 2nd. Even though their winning % was less than the 3rd place St Louis Browns.(.691-.703) The rules of the day and until 1883 stated that the standings would be based on total wins, not on winning %.

The Dark Blues took 2nd place thanks to a 7 game winning streak to end the season.
