1879 World Series Game #4

John Ward vs. Tommy Bond 10/10/1879 @ South End Grounds

John Ward retakes the hill for the Grays trying to stave off elimination, while Tommy Bond looks to continue his DMB dominance by sweeping the Grays in front of the hometown fans.

George Wright lined the 1st pitch of the game into centerfield for a lead off single. One out later, a slow ground ball went for an infield hit that put runners on 1st and second. Tommy Bond induced a slow roller from Paul Hines, that he fielded easily, then dropped it, picked it up, and dropped it again for an error, loading the bases with one out. With the infield at double play depth the Red Caps were unable to turn an inning ending DP, that allowed George Wright to score the 1st run of the game.

Not to be out done, Sadie Houck took the 1st pitch he saw from John Ward, and deposited into the left field bleachers for a game tying HR.

Red Caps  1   Grays  1 (1)

In the 3rd, Tommy Bond stroked a line drive double, and after a Grays’ error there were runners at the corners with just one out. John O’Rourke doubled to drive in a run, a groundball and a passed ball led to 2 more runs.

Red Caps  4   Grays  1 (3)

In the 4th Joe Start led off the inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball. In the 5th George Wright led off with a single and later scored on a sac fly to get the Grays within a run.

Red Caps  4   Grays  3 (5)

In the 6th, 2 Sadie Houck errors led to 2 unearned runs and a Grays’ one run lead.

Grays  5   Red Caps  4 (6)

The Red Caps tied the score after Charley Jones singled and came around to score after Grays’ catcher Emil Gross allowed 2 passed balls in the inning.

Red Caps  5   Grays  5 (6)

The see-saw battle continued when Sadie Houck committed his 3rd error of the game putting Paul Hines on base for Mike McGeary’s rbi double.

Grays  6   Red Caps  5 (7)

Continuing the pattern for this series, John O’Rourke took the 1st pitch he saw in the 8th and crushed a lead off triple off John Ward. Charley Jones would promptly single him in with the tying run.

Both teams would go down in order in the 9th, sending this game into extra innings, the 2nd of the series.

Red Caps  6   Grays  6 (9)

Tommy Bond set the Grays down in order in the 10th. In the bottom of the inning with 2 outs, Charley Jones walked on close 3-2 pitch that could have ended the inning. John Ward, obviously still miffed about the call served up a fat pitch to John Morrill that he lined into right for a base hit. Still miffed at the call, John Ward served up another fat pitch to Ezra Sutton. Sutton blooped a fly ball into left that fell in for a walk-off single that won the game and the Series for the Red Caps.

FINAL- Red Caps  7   Grays  6 (10)

Summary: Both teams combined to hit 3 HRs in this series a huge power surge compared to just 1 HR in the 1st 3 DMB Series. The MVP once again has to be Tommy Bond. He didn’t dominate like he did in his 3 previous MVP performances. He still “managed” to go 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA. Not bad for a slightly sub par performance.
