PITCHERS DUAL HIGHLIGHTS GAME 1 MATCHUP

Tim Keefe and Charlie Radbourn battled for 12 innings, each putting up goose eggs inning after inning. In the 12th Keefe handled the 1st 2 batters with ease, but with 2 outs Jack Farrell lined a single into centerfield that was mishandled by Charlie Reipsclager allowing Farrell to reach 2nd. Joe Start singled to right easily scoring Farrell with the winning run.

Both pitchers dominated from the start. Keefe took a no hitter into the 8th inning that was broken up by a lead off single from Joe Start.

Radbourn retired the 1st 12 batters he faced before getting into trouble in the 5th. 2 singles put runners on the corners with 1 out, but Bill Holbert banged into an inning ending double play. Radbourn would allow only 1 more hit over the final 5 innings.

The Providence Grays have been here before appearing in this their 4th DMB World Series. They are hoping for a different result as their previous 3 appearances ended in defeat.  They come into this series after easily beating out the Beaneaters by 10.5 games in the National League. Charlie Radbourn’s record setting performance(60 wins, 73 complete games) was the main reason for their success. Offensively they were 4th in the league in hitting with only a .241 avg. Paul Hines led the team with a .302 avg., 36 doubles, and 10 triples.

The American Association Metropolitans have the 1-2 punch of Jack Lynch and Tim Keefe on they hill, both winners of 37 games. Dave Orr led the league with a .354 avg. and 112 rbis. Steve Brady, Tom Esterbrook, and Dasher Troy set the table for Orr as each scored over a 100 runs.

At the end of the season both teams met in a best of 5 series that was billed as the “World Series” by the New York Clipper.  Each team ponied up $1,000 dollars in the winner take all matchup.

The Grays would easily beat the upstart Metropolitans in 3 games. Old Hoss Radbourn would win all 3 games easily, by scores of 6-0, 3-1, and 11-2 over 3 successive days.

PREDICTION: After 2 straight AA World Series victories, it’s time for the NL to win one. Radbourn will pitch every game, and there’s no way he loses 4 times.

1884 Biography-Tim Keefe

Timothy John “Tim” Keefe

Born: 1/1/1857-Cambridge Mass.

Died 4/23/1933-Cambridge Mass.AHB (4)

Tim Keefe was one of the most durable and intelligent pitchers of the 19th Century. He completed 554 of his 593 starts, an astounding 93%. He also knew the strengths and weaknesses of every hitter in the league, utilizing not only a fastball and a curveball, but a change up as well. He was one of the 1st pitchers to consistently get batters out with the change up.

Keefe began his career in 1880 pitching for the Troy Trojans. After 3 uneventful seasons with Troy, the team disbanded and Keefe signed on with NY Metropolitans of the American Association. His 1st season with the Metropolitans saw Keefe win 41 games, pitch 619 innings, and lead the league with 361 strikeouts.

After 2 seasons in the AA, Metropolitan owner John B. Day moved Keefe to the NL New York Giants, a team that he also owned. Keefe joined a Giant team that had future Hall of Famers Buck Ewing, Monte Ward, Roger Conner, Mickey Welch, and Jim O’Rourke. In 1888 he would lead the Giants to the 1st of 2 consecutive NL Championships by leading the league in wins(35), ERA(1.74), and strikeouts(335).

Keefe would play 1 season with the NY Giants of the Players League, but would return to the NL in 1891. The innings by then had taken their toll on Keefe’s right arm. His record over his last 3 seasons would be 39-46. He would retire after the 1893 season  with 342 wins, still 10th all time. His record of 19 straight victories in 1888 has yet to be bettered. And he still holds the record for having a win in the most parks with 47. Randy Johnson currently has a win in 41 different parks.

During his career Keefe started a sporting goods business. He designed and sold the Giants their black uniforms, and he designed and sold the official ball for the Player’s League. A league he was instrumental in forming along with his brother-in-law Monte Ward.

After retiring he became an umpire but retired after 2 seasons. Primarily due to the abuse he received while umpiring game at the Polo Grounds, his home park as a player for 5 seasons. He also coached baseball at Harvard, Princeton, and Tufts University. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. He died in 1933 at the age of 76.

1884-Year In Review

                                                                                                           1884

Prior to the start of the 1884 season the NL and AA got together to pen a 10 Amendment Constitution, a sort of peace settlement between the 2 leagues, known as the National Agreement. The end result led to the formation of a 3rd Major League, specifically formed to eliminate the Reserve Clause that had been strengthened by the National Agreement.

The Union Association was formed by Henry Lucas, a 26 year old railroad magnate. With no Reserve Clause it was a hit with the players, but not a hit with the fans, as the League struggled to complete its 1st and ultimately last season.

The NL remained at 8 teams, while the AA expanded to 12 teams, adding teams in Brooklyn, Indianapolis, Toledo, and Washington. The Washington franchise failed to complete their season and was eventually replaced by a team in Richmond.

The NL reduced the number of balls needed for a walk to 6, and removed all restrictions from a pitcher’s motion, thus allowing overhand pitching.

The AA awarded 1st base to a batter that was hit by a pitched ball.

In the NL the Providence Grays took 1st place, thanks to the offensive efforts of Paul Hines, and Jerry Denny. Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn was the pitching staff, winning 60 games and pitching 678 innings.

Ned Williamson would take advantage of a new ground rule at tiny Lake Front Park(180’ to the left field line, 300’ to center) and would hit 27 home runs. In previous seasons balls hit into the stands were considered ground rule doubles. This would revert back after the 84 season, but Williamson’s 27 HRs would be the record until Babe Ruth broke it with 29 in 1919.

Charlie Sweeney(Prov. Grays) would strike out 19, a record that would stand until Roger Clemens struck out 20 in 1986.

In the AA, the standings for the 1st week of July had the Louisville Eclipse in 1st place, with the 6th place Baltimore Orioles only 2 games back. The remainder of the season saw the NY Metropolitans heat up and eventually take the pennant by 6.5 games. Dave Orr and his league leading .354 avg. led the offense while the pitching staff was anchored by Jack Lynch and Tim Keefe. Both pitchers won 37 games, and they combined to start all but 1 game for the Metropolitans.

Moses Fleetwood Walker would play in 42 games for the Toledo Blue Stockings. An injury in July, along with the building racial tension in baseball and post Civil War America would lead to his release. He would be the last African-American to play MLB until Jackie Robinson in 1947.

The lone UA pennant was won by the St Louis Maroons.  One of only 5 UA teams to play over 100 games. I’ve got to give credit to the Union Association for showing a little originality in some of their team names. The Quicksteps, the Cowboys, the Keystones, and my all-time favorite: St Paul Apostles. They only lasted 9 games, they didn’t hit so well, or pitch so well, but they could proselytize with the best of them.

Not Quite Trivia Question Answered

Before the start of the 1883 series I noticed a difference from the previous participants to the participating teams in this series. So I asked:  What is the distinct difference with these 2 teams?

No knowledge of baseball, history, or quantum mechanics was needed to come up with the correct answer.

Here is a list of the DMB matchups so far:

1876-Hartford Dark Blues vs. Chicago White Stockings

1877-Hartford Dark Blues vs. Boston Red Caps

1878-Boston Red Caps vs. Cincinnati Reds

1879-Boston Red Caps vs. Providence Grays

1880-Providence Grays vs Chicago White Stockings

1881-Providence Grays vs Chicago White Stockings

1882-Cincinnati Red Stockings vs Chicago White Stockings

1883-Philadelphia Athletics vs Boston Beaneaters

Do you notice the distinct difference?

Yes……they are the 1st teams in the series that do not have a color in their name!!!!!

The unimaginative National League had 73% of its’ teams utilize a color in their team names from 1876 to 1881. If I used the Ruby Legs for the Worcester team instead of Worcesters that number would be closer to 80%. The American Association not only brought beer to the ballparks, but they also brought a little less color to baseball, as only 33% of their team names have a color reference.

Currently only 4 of the 30 MLB teams have a color reference in their team names.

Jim Whitney vs.Bobby Mathews 10/11/1883,@ Jefferson Street Grounds

MATHEWS SILENCES BEANEATERS, PHILADELPHIA FANS BREATH EASIER

(Why does it have to end???)

Bobby Mathews tossed a 2 hit shutout giving the American Association Philadelphia Athletics their 1st DMB Championship. Jim Whitney pitched in tough luck once again for the Beaneaters as 6 errors and 4 passed balls led to his 2nd loss in this series despite a .069 ERA. The A’s scored single runs in the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 8th innings, but Harry Stovey’s sac fly in the 1st was all they needed to win this, the 8th DMB World Championship.

SUMMARY: Jim Whitney allowed only 2 earned runs in 26 IP and still managed to lose 2 games. The Beaneaters defense allowed 2/3 of the runs scored against them in this series to be unearned. Better defense and clutch hitting was the difference for the Athletics.

A tough choice for MVP. Bobby Mathews won 2 games including the clincher, but George Bradley also won 2 games, and when he wasn’t on the mound he also played 3rd contributing a .300 average. A close one, but the edge goes to Bradley.

BEANEATERS RUN OUT OF GAS AS LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT

(I’m so witty!!!!)

Trailing 5-1 in the 8th, the Beaneaters made the game interesting. Joe Hornung and Jack Burdock opened the inning with hard singles to center.John Morrill doubled to right center to score Hornung and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with the tying run coming to the plate with nobody out. George Bradley was removed from the game in favor of the fresh arm of Jersey Bakely. 2 infield groundouts scored Burdock and Morrill, but Ben Radford struck out to end the inning. Trailing by 1 in the 9th the Beaneaters went down 1-2-3, giving Jersey Bakely a rare 19th Century save, and a 3-1 lead for the Athletics in this best of 7 series.

The Athletics banged out 12 hits with Fred Corey leading the way with 4. The big blow was a 2 out double off the bat of Judd Birchall in the 6th.

George Bradley vs Charlie Buffington 10/5/1883,@ South End Grounds
BRADLEY WHIFFS 9 BEANEATERS AS AS WIN GAME 2
(More fun with Beaneater humor)

George Bradley set a new DMB World Series record by striking out 9 Beaneaters. His complete game 4 hitter sends the American Association A’s home with a 2-0 lead in this the 8th DMB World Series.

The A’s loaded the bases in the 1st, sandwiching a Mike Moynahan double between 2 walks. A passed ball and an rbi groundout plated 2 runs. In the 4th Fred Corey lead off with a triple and would score on a Bob Blakiston ground out. That was all Bradley would need as the Beaneaters were…………………silenced for the 2nd straight game.

A couple of guesses on the DMB World Series-not quite trivia question. But no correct answers yet. The answer requires no knowledge of baseball, history, science, World literature, or potent potables for $600 Alex.  Think juvenile. Think outside the box, but stay inside the lines.

Bobby Mathews vs Jim Whitney 10/3/1883, @ South End Grounds

BEANEATERS STINK UP THE SOUTH END GROUNDS

(Is that the best sports headline ever?)

The National League once again did not fair well in a DMB World Series matchup with the upstart American Association. Bobby Mathews tossed a 4 hitter against the hard hitting Beaneaters, while the Athletics teed off on Jim Whitney for 14 hits. 6 Beaneater errors led to 7 unearned runs.

7 different A’s scored or drove in a run as everybody contributed.  Mike Moynahan and Judd Burchall each had 3 hits for the A’s, while the lone Beaneater run came via a Sam Wise Home Run.
