Charlie Buffinton vs Kid Nichols 10/15/1891, @ Congress Street Grounds

A rematch of the rain soaked game 2.

“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you…..”

REDS WIN DESPITE  STOVEY SLAM

Kid Nichols was ineffective, giving up runs in each of the 1st 4 innings of the game, and staked the Reds to a 7-0 lead in the 7th.

In an historic bottom of the 7th, King Kelly doubled when he pinch hit for Kid Nichols. Billy Nash walked on a close pitch that raised the dander of Reds pitcher Charlie Buffinton. Tommy Tucker raised a welt on his left arm when he was plunked by a ticked off Buffinton. Herman Long scorched a line drive right at Reds 1st baseman Dan Brouthers for the 2nd out of the inning. Harry Stovey proceeded to deposit the 1st pitch he saw over the centerfield wall for the 1st Grand Slam in DMB World Series history. That was his 3rd HR of the series.

A lathered Buffinton tossed the 1st pitch to Bobby Lowe juuuuuust a little bit inside, causing the home plate umpire to toss Buffinton out of the game. Another DMB World Series 1st.

Ed Daley came on to finish the game and earn the save. Dan Brouthers hit a single, triple and a HR, but was denied the 1st ever cycle in DMB World Series history when he walked in his final at bat.

This series is now tied at 2 games.

  1. Nice research on a long forgotten era of professional baseball. Have you heard of the book, “The Scrapbook History of Baseball”? It’s a great resourch for these early leagues and championship sereis.
