A borderline Hall of Famer who played in 13 seasons, but only played fulltime in 9 seasons. Bill James lists him as the worst player in the Hall of Fame.

1894 DMB World Series-Year in Review

The 12 team National League returns with every team from the 1893 season, and they all retained their respective team names. An unusual occurrence in 19th century baseball.

A couple of rule changes of note: The infield fly rule was instituted. A foul bunt was now counted as a strike. And the sac bunt became an official statistic.

The league saw an offensive explosion that arrived a year after the pitcher’s mound was moved to 60 ft. 6 inches. The league average was .309, with each game averaging 15 runs and 22 hits. The league ERA was a healthy 5.32.

The Philadelphia Phillies hit .350 as a team, the highest team average in baseball history. Their outfield combined to hit .400, with Sam Thompson (.415) Ed Delahanty(.404) and Billy Hamilton(.403) all topping the .400 mark. The powerhouse Phillies managed only a 4th place finish 18 games out.

Hugh Duffy(Beaneaters) hit  a record .440 with 18 HRs and 145 rbis, missing the Triple Crown by 2 rbis.

Amos Rusie(NY) would win the pitcher’s Triple Crown with 36 wins, 195 K’s. and a 2.78 ERA.

The league saw an upswing of rowdy play as the players terrorized opponents, and umpires with a constant verbal barrage of abuse. Dirty play such as intentional spiking, and the occasional hip check on a runner was also in vogue. The chief antagonists were the Cleveland Spiders and Ned Hanlon’s infamous Baltimore Orioles, winners of their 1st of 3 successive NL Pennants. The NY Giants finished 2nd thanks to a league leading 3.83 ERA. Last season’s DMB Champion Pirates finished 7th with a 65-65 record. The Orioles and Giants would meet in the 1st Temple Cup  series at seasons end.

Other Events: 5/30- Bobby Lowe(Bost) would become the 1st player to hit 4 HRs in a game. All would be hit over the fence, 2 would be hit in the 3rd inning, and all of them would be hit against Elton “Icebox” Chamberlain.

6/30- Fred Clarke would make his major league debut with Louisville going 5-5. A record debut that still stands.

At seasons end Jerry Denny would retire. He was the last position player to play his whole career without using a glove. Pitcher Gus Weyhing would last until 1901.

Frank Killen vs Kid Nichols 10/11/1893, @, South End Grounds

VANHALTREN’S 9TH INNING HOME RUN WINS SERIES FOR PIRATES

With the score tied at 4 George Vanhaltren took the 1st pitch he saw in the top of the 9th and deposited it into the right field stands for a DMB World Series winning home run.

The Pirates had taken a 4-0 lead after 5 innings, scoring 3 in the 4th when they smacked 4 straight singles to start the inning. Denny Lyons drove in 2 with a hard single to right.

Frank Killen took a 2 hit shutout into the 7th, but with 2 outs the Beaneaters tied the score with 5 straight singles.

The Pirates win their 1st DMB World Series, while the Beaneaters lose their 2nd straight World Series.

SUMMARY: After falling behind 2 games to 0, the Pirates outscored the Beaneaters 30-10 to win the next 3 games and take charge of the series. Despite losing 3 games Kid Nichols led all pitchers with a 2.70 ERA. Unfortunately the rest of the staff combined to put up a 7.75 ERA.

Billy Nash hit 4 home runs for the Beaneaters, but was held hitless in the crucial game 7.

The MVP goes to Elmer Smith. His .452 average, 14 hits and 12 runs scored led all batters. Pre-series MVP choice Lou Bierbauer hit just .167 with 5 singles.

BILLY HAMILTON

PHILADELPHIA N.L. 1890-1895

BOSTON N.L. 1896-1901

HOLDS RECORDS FOR SINGLE SEASON:

RUNS SCORED, 196 IN 1894; STOLEN

BASES, 115 IN 1891. LIFETIME TOTAL

STOLEN BASES, 937. BATTED .395 IN

1893, .399 IN 1894, .393 IN 1895.

LED NATIONAL LEAGUE IN 1891 WITH

.338 AVERAGE. LIFETIME BATTING

AVERAGE OF .344. SCORED 100 OR

MORE RUNS DURING 10 SEASONS.

This Hall of Fame plaque is rife with discrepancies. That’s right….I said rife!!!  It does not include his 2 years in the American Association with the Kansas City Cowboys. He scored 192 runs in 1894. He stole 111 bases in 1891. And none of his averages match his real life totals. He actually hit .404 in 1894. And last but not least he scored over 100 runs in 11 seasons. His lifetime .344 average is correct. I’m assuming that some of these totals differ due to the diligent efforts of SABR researchers.

I’m amazed it took until 1961 for Hamilton to get elected to the Hall. His .344 lifetime average is great for any Era, and his 912 lifetime stolen bases is impressive as well. He is one of only 3 players to score more runs(1690) than have games played(1591).

Nash hit his HRs in the 3rd to tie the game at 2, and in the 4th to put the Beaneaters up for good. Long and Nash combined for 8 hits, 6 runs scored, and 5 rbis against an ineffective Red Ehret.

The Pirates mounted a serious rally in the 9th against a gassed Jack Stivetts.  Harry Staley came in to get the last 2 outs, but not before they had brought the tying run to the plate.

Game 7 looks to possibly be a high scoring back and forth contest.

Kid Nichols vs Frank Killen 10/8/1893, @, Exposition Park

PIRATES HIT BEANEATERS BROADSIDE FOR ANOTHER EASY VICTORY

kbats_lyons Denny Lyons-Has a .310 lifetime average over 13 seasons

Using 3 walks, 4 singles and a Beaneater error the Pirates scored 6 runs in the 2nd, taking an early 8-1 lead that would never be tested. Banging out 15 hits against 4 Beaneater pitchers every Pirate starter scored and drove in at least 1 run, except for Lou Bierbauer, this replayer’s sentimental pick for series MVP.

Denny Lyons had a 2 run triple in the 1st, and Patsy Donovan added a solo home run in the 8th for the Pirates. The Beaneaters banged out 12 hits, including 3 each from Tommy McCarthy and Bobby Lowe, but left 13 men on base. Frank Killen allowed 6 walks and 9 hits in his 8+ innings of work.

The Beaneaters head home for the final 2 games of this series needing wins in both games.

Jack Stivetts vs Red Ehret10/7/1893, @ Exposition Park

PIRATES SWASHBUCKLE BEANEATERS TO EVEN THE SERIES

elmer smith By my count there have been approximately 145 Smiths that have played Major League baseball. 2 Elmer Smiths, and 2 just listed as Smith.

The Pirates banged out 19 hits against 3 Beaneater pitchers, led by Elmer Smith’s 5 hits and 4 runs scored. Smith hit a 2 run Home Run in the 3rd to put the Pirates up 5-0. Smith added 2 doubles and a single to finish a triple shy of the 1st ever DMB World Series cycle.

Red Ehret pitched a complete game 6 hitter. Beaneater starter Jack Stivetts could not get out of the 4 inning allowing 7 earned runs in 3 IP.

Another Hall of Fame plaque that doesn’t get it right. Burkett topped the .400 mark only 2 x not 3. He did lead the league in hitting 3 x on his way to a lifetime .338 average. Burkett is also unofficially the all time leader in inside-the-park home runs at 55. As a pitcher he compiled a 3-11 record with a 5.56 ERA.

Kid Nichols vs Frank Killen 10/6/1893,@ Exposition Park

BEANEATERS DEFENSE HANDS VICTORY TO PIRATES

killen An 1898 Cameo Pepsin Pin of Frank Killen

The Pirates scored all 4 of their runs in the 5th inning thanks to 2 key errors on easy groundballs. With 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, George Van Haltren and Patsy Donovan singled scoring the 1st Pirate run of the game. Elmer Smith rolled a potential inning ending groundball to shortstop Herman Long, but Long booted the ball allowing Van Haltren to score. Jake Beckley hit another easy groundball to 2nd sacker Bobby Lowe, but he too booted the ball to load the bases. Denny Lyon then singled to center to drive in 2 runs and cinch the Pirate victory.

The Beaneaters threatened in the 7th and 9th innings, but double play grounders ended both scoring threats.

The Beaneaters lead this series 2 games to 1.
