The Pirates scored all 4 of their runs in the 5th inning thanks to 2 key errors on easy groundballs. With 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, George Van Haltren and Patsy Donovan singled scoring the 1st Pirate run of the game. Elmer Smith rolled a potential inning ending groundball to shortstop Herman Long, but Long booted the ball allowing Van Haltren to score. Jake Beckley hit another easy groundball to 2nd sacker Bobby Lowe, but he too booted the ball to load the bases. Denny Lyon then singled to center to drive in 2 runs and cinch the Pirate victory.
The Beaneaters threatened in the 7th and 9th innings, but double play grounders ended both scoring threats.
