On January 19, 1900 Boston Beaneaters catcher Marty Bergen brutally murdered his wife, 2 children and then himself on his farm in North Brookfield, Mass. For more on Marty Bergen check here.

On March 8, 1900 the National league eliminated the Cleveland Spiders, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, and the Louisville Colonels. Making the National League an 8 team league that would survive virtually unchanged until 1953.

The League would adopt a 140 game schedule and would inexplicably go back to the 1 umpire system after just one year of the experimental 2 umpire system. Home plate would be changed from a 12 inch square to the current 17 inch wide, 5-sided home plate.

Ned Hanlon’s Brooklyn Superbas would win the pennant by 4.5 games over the Pirates. Brooklyn improved thanks to the addition of 3 Baltimore pitchers. Frank Kitson, Harry Howell, and Iron Man Joe McGinnity would combine to win 70 of the teams 82 victories. The Pirates would benefit from an influx of Louisville players including Deacon Phillippe, Fred Clarke, Tommy Leach, Rube Waddell, and some guy named Honus Wagner. These 2 teams would meet in a best of 5 series at seasons end, and will meet 110 years later in the best of 7 DMB World Series.

1900 also marked the beginning of the American League. Ban Johnson had been successfully running the minor league Western League, and felt the time was right to challenge the National League monopoly and claim major league status for the American League. With no teams in New York city, or Pennsylvania, the American League didn’t quite have enough fire power to intimidate the National League into signing any kind of national agreement, but things would change in 1901. Despite it’s “minor league” status, I’ll include the final standings, and league leaders below.

Other events of note:

Bid McPhee would retire. He was the last fulltime position play to remain gloveless.

In the National League opener the Phillies would beat the Beaneaters 19-17 in 10 innings. This is the highest scoring opener in history.

July 12- Noodles Hahn(Cinc) would no hit the Phillies 4-0.

July 17- Harry Wolverton(Phil) would hit 3 triples against the Pirates.

July 17- Christy Mathewson would make his major league debut.  He would come in as a reliever and hit 3 batters, walk 2 give up  6 runs. Not an auspicious start . He would finish the season with an 0-3 record and a 5.08 ERA.

Sept 7- Kid Nichols records his 300th win

DMB World Series-Baseball Card Reminiscing:1887 Kalamazoo Bats

The 1887 Kalamazoo Bats card set contains 60(?) cards consisting of team photos, portrait style photos, outdoor photos, sliding, trees, and more sliding and trees. It’s not one of the more known 19th Century card sets, but it has some of the rarest cards, as well as some of the more unique.AHB_1Outfielder Denny Lyons getting checked out by the trainer. What other card would have the trainer get equal billing? Taylor(no 1st name given) was probably the local vet just back from delivering a litter of puppies. “Your paw…..I mean …..your hand looks fine, probably just one broken bone. Now get out there and play.”

mays kalamazoo

Metropolitan pitcher Al Mays. There are several sit down portrait studio type cards. All players have the same proud look on their face, and many are wearing ties. None, however are leaning into a mirror and worshiping their reflection.

kbats_bierbauer_gallagher

Lou Bierbauer(One of my favorite players) tags out a player that might be Jim Gallagher. He is the only Gallagher that played baseball around 1886/1887 listed in the Baseball Encyclopedia. He played just one game with Washington, getting 1 hit, in 1886. It was his only game played. If it is in fact Jim Gallagher he is buried in Hyde Park Cemetery in Scranton, Pa. just 3 miles from where I sit. Like many of the Kalamazoo cards, this one featured sliding, and was taken outdoors with a canvas backdrop that included trees, lots of trees.

kbats_bastian_lyons

More sliding, but where are the trees? I need more cowbell…..I mean trees……I need more trees in here!!!. Charlie Bastian puts the tag on Denny Lyons. And, as in all the Kalamazoo Bats cards, the runner is clearly out. The umpire in the background is totally out of position to make the right call.

kbats_andrews03

Ed Andrews goes up there hacking. Baseball, apple pie, and……. suspenders.

kbats_clements_01

Hey, this is 1887, there’s no gloves in baseball. By 1887 catchers were regularly using some type of glove to protect their hands. And yes, this hard throwing lefty was a catcher. Jack Clements caught in 1076 games, and was the last regular southpaw catcher in the game.

milligan kalamazoo

Hmm?……there’s something wrong with this card. I can’t quite put my finger on it……oh…..I know……..Henry Larkin has his name misspelled……..No……that’s not it……..there’s not enough trees……..no…….what could it be?  Jocko Milligan and Henry Larkin are clearly giving their all to sell this very close play at the plate, but the photographer has gone a different way , both artistically and mentally.  The wooden beams supporting the canvas, and the concrete wall in the background, at least from my perspective, do not add to the overall baseball ambience.  I wonder what Jocko and Henry said when they saw this disaster.  This card recently sold at auction for $17,625.00.  Maybe the photographer actually knew what he was doing.

Kalamazoo bats 1887 Do these pants make my ass look fat? This card features Jocko Milligan at catcher and Harry Stovey hitting. This photograph was obviously taken by the same photographer of the previous card. I can hear him now, “Trust me Jocko, you won’t look stupid, I am an artiste.” Harry looks like he’s waiting for the ball to come busting through the background canvas at any second.

Most of the Kalamazoo Bats cards  want you to “Smoke Kalamazoo Bats”. I’m sure the kids did just that.

Ted Lewis vs Jack Dunn 10/17/1899, @  Washington Park

BEANEATERS WIN DMB WORLD SERIES AS SUPERBAS BATS GO SILENT

Ted_LewisAfter retiring,  Ted Lewis served as President of Massachusetts State College and the University of New Hampshire

The Boston Beaneaters banged out 13 hits, 12 off Superbas starter Jack Dunn, and edged the quiet bats of the Superbas by a score of 6-5.

The Superbas took advantage of the wildness of Ted Lewis to score their 5 runs. 7 walks by Lewis was offset by just 3 singles managed by the Superbas.

Herman Long drove in 4 runs with 3 hits and a sac fly.

Jack Dunn vs Ted Lewis 10/13/1899, Bro99-Bos99, South End Grounds

SUPERBAS COME BACK TO WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS

Bill Dahlen’s 42 game hitting streak in 1894 is the longest by a right handed batter in the National League, and is the 4th best of all time.

Doc Casey grounded a single into centerfield to score Joe Kelley with the game winning run in the 12th inning for the Superbas.

The Beaneaters scored 2 runs in the 2nd to take an early lead. Hugh Duffy singled to open the inning and scored after Jimmy Collins singled to center and Fielder Jones uncorked a wild throw while trying to nab Duffy at 3rd. Bobby Lowe flew to center where Jones made the catch, but once again uncorked a wild throw over the 3rd baseman’s head to allow Collins to score. Herman Long smacked a long home run to lead off the 4 to put the Beaneaters up 3-1.

The Superbas battled back scoring single runs in the 6th and 7th, and tied the score in the 8th after Bill Dahlen tripled with 2 outs and scored on a Doc Casey single.

Ted Lewis pitched into the 12th for the Beaneaters but just ran out of gas. Joe Kelley reached base after Fred Tenney booted his groundball at 1st. Bill Dahlen would single him to 3rd, and he would score on Doc Casey’s rbi single.

The Superbas now have a 2-1 lead in the series.

Kid Nichols vs Brickyard Kennedy 10/11/1899, @, Washington Park

SUPERBAS BIG INNING MAKES A WINNER OF KENNEDY

11800_sporting_news_kennedy

Brickyard Kennedy pitched for the Pirates in game 5 of the 1903 World Series. After matching 0’s with Cy Young for 5 innings the Pilgrims bats came to life, and the Pirates defense went to sleep. The Pigrims would win 11-4, this would be the last game Kennedy would pitch at the major league level.

The Beaneaters broke a scoreless tie in the 6th, scoring an unearned run off Brickyard Kennedy. He would not give up another run. In the bottom of the 6th the Superbas sent 9 men to the plate against Kid Nichols. With 1 out Willie Keeler smacked a triple to deep centerfield, the 1st Superbas’ hit since the 1st inning off Nichols. John Daly reached on catcher’s interference, then Nichols seemed to lose his composure. Hughie Jennings singled in Keeler, Joe Kelley walked, Fielder Jones singled in 2, Bill Dahlen was hit by a pitch, Doc Casey hit a sac fly, and Duke Farrell singled in Jones. An over anxious Bill Dahlen was thrown out trying to advance to 3rd ending the inning.

The Beaneaters loaded the bases in the 9th but Hugh Duffy sent Willie Keeler to the right field wall for the final flyball out.

This series is now tied at 1 game apiece.

Vic Willis vs Jay Hughes10/10/1899,@ Washington Park

BEANEATERS OVERWHELM SUPERBAS

Vic Willis was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995 despite losing 29 games in 1905, the most in the 20th Century.

Fred Tenney banged a 3-2 pitch from Superbas’ starter Jay Hughes deep into centerfield for a lead-off triple in the 1st. Chick Stahl banged the very next pitch into the same part of the park for an rbi triple. From there things only got worse. Billy Hamilton and Herman Long singled to give the Beaneaters a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded.

6 Superbas’ errors frustrated Hughes all game as he served up 16 hits and 10 runs before being removed in the 7th. Beaneaters starter Vic Willis pitched the complete game but struggled with his control, issuing 6 walks. The Beaneaters played flawless defense behind Willis, limiting the Superbas scoring opportunities.

The 1887 N28 Allen and Ginter tobacco cards is considered to be the 1st nationally distributed baseball card. The cards measured 1-1/2” x 2-3/4” and there were 10 cards in the set. The cards were a subset of The World Champions card set that also included boxers, rowers, pool players, and rifle marksmen that included Annie Oakley.

The ballplayers included in the set were Cap Anson, Mike Kelly, Charlie Bennett, John Ward, John Clarkson, Tim Keefe, Joe Mulvey, Jack Glasscock, Bob Caruthers, and Charlie Comiskey.

A couple of noteworthy names are John L. Sullivan, Jack Dempsey, and Buffalo Bill.

As you can see these are great looking cards, and I would love to own any one of the above cards. The most valuable card and, for me the most disturbing card is the Cap Anson card. Scroll further down the page to see this card. But I must warn you, do so at your own peril. Do not view this card in the presence of small children, and wait at least 2 hours before going in the ocean.

Scary isn’t it?  Just look at the eyes, they generate evil, they bore straight into your soul, they seek only their next victim. George Romero modeled his flesh-eating zombies after this card. This card for me is the stuff that nightmares are made of. Cap Anson is wielding his bat as a weapon of destruction, and just wants to eat your brains.

Am I overreacting? Or should we all sleep with the lights on?

The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings were the 1st openly professional baseball team. There were plenty of paid players playing in the “Amateur” National Association but they were paid in a more discreet manner. Their 81 game winning streak is the stuff of legend.

This team photo card was distributed by Peck and Snyder’s, a Manhattan sporting goods store. It features the team on the front and used the back as advertising for their store. I always thought that this was the only team that they used, but they also had cards featuring the Chicago White Stockings, New York Mutuals and the Philadelphia Athletics, among others.

This is the line-up of this historic team:

There is a book entitled If I Never Get Back by Darryl Brock that is a fictional account of the 1869 team as told by Sam Fowler a modern day newspaper reporter who finds himself transported back in time to 1869. He hooks up with the Red Stockings, becomes the team’s promoter, and get’s to hang with Mark Twain. If you want a good piece of “historical” fiction that spotlights the Red Stockings as well as post Civil War America, I highly recommend this book.
