Ed Siever vs Ed Reulbach 10/10/1907, @, West Side Grounds

reulbach Ed Reulbach played college baseball at Notre Dame

REULBACH DOMINATES TIGERS WHILE CUBS BATS EXPLODE

Ed Reulbach tossed a 4 hitter while the Cubs banged out 13 hits against 2 Tiger pitchers to easily win game 3 by a score of 8-1.

Johnny Kling and Joe Tinker banged out 3 hits apiece with Kling driving in 3 runs.

The Cubs lead this series 2 games to 1.

While playing these games I’m using as played line ups, and take responsibility for all pitching changes, as well as pinch hitters. The computer controls the in game action, bunting, stealing, taking the extra base, etc. In the actual 1907 World Series the teams combined for 21 stolen bases in 5 games. So far there has not been 1 stolen base in this series. That bothers me, I think I need to tweak the database to get these guys running. There’s no way that Ty Cobb goes 3 games without stealing a base.

George Mullin vs Jack Pfiester 10/9/1907, @ West Side Grounds II

Mullin George Mullin is the only pitcher to pitch in a World Series during a 20 loss season.

TIGERS GO EXTRA INNINGS TO BEAT CUBBIES

In the top of the 13th with the score tied 3-3, Davy Jones lead off the inning with a walk off reliever Carl Lundgren, the 8th walk issued by Cub pitching on the day. Germany Schaefer bounced a single into right for his 4th hit of the game, putting runners on 1st and second. Wahoo Sam Crawford sent a long fly into right to allow Jones to tag and move to 3rd with 1 out. Ty Cobb grounded to a drawn in Joe Tinker at short, who gunned the ball to Johnny Kling nailing Jones at the plate. With 2 outs Claude Rossman bounced a single in to left field to score Schaefer, when he air mailed the throw home, Ty Cobb scored on the error to give the Tigers the 5-3 victory.

20 game loser George Mullin out pitched Jack Pfiester taking a 3 hit shutout into the 8th. When the Tigers scored an unearned run in the 9th to go up 3-1 the game looked to be over. Wildfire Schulte doubled to open the 9th against a gassed but game Mullin. After 2 lazy flyball outs Jimmy Slagle doubled off the left field wall to score Schulte, sending Mullin to the shower. Jimmy Sheckard singled in Slagle to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

This series is tied at 1 game apiece.

Before replaying the 1907 World Series let’s take a look at what really happened when the Detroit Tigers played the Chicago Cubs in the 4th World Series.

West Side Grounds during the 1907 World Series

The Cubs had won 107 games while the Tigers had won 92 during the regular season. The Cubs had by far the better pitching and a smarter more experienced offense. It showed in the World Series. The Cubs ran all over Tiger catcher Boss Schmidt, stealing 15 bases during the series, including 7 in game 1, a World Series record against a single catcher. Schmidt hit just .167 as well, not a World Series to tell your grand kids about. Ty Cobb hit just .200 with no stolen bases, a lackluster showing from the 20 year old batting champion.

4 different Cub pitchers won games, Brown, Pfiester, Reulbach and Overall, while combining for a miniscule ERA of 0.75.

GAME #1 10/8- West Side Grounds, Chicago (Bill Donovan vs Orval Overall)

Tigers  3

Cubs    3 (12)

The Cubs and Overall took a 1-0 lead into the 8th inning. With 1out Davey Jones singled and immediately stole 2nd. Joe Tinker booted a Germany Schaefer groundball putting runners on the corners. A Sam Crawford single and a sac fly scored 3 runs, putting the Tigers up 3-1.

In the Cubs 9th, Frank Chance lead off with a single, and Harry Steinfeldt was hit by a pitch. An error loaded the bases with just one out,  a groundout made the score 3-2. Donovan struck out pinch hitter Del Howard, but the pitch got away from catcher Boss Schmidt to allow the tying run to score. Johnny Evers was thrown out trying to steal home plate to end the inning.

After 3 scoreless innings the game was called because of darkness.

GAME #2 10/9- West Side Grounds, Chicago(George Mullin vs Jack Pfiester )

Cubs   3

Tigers 1

Some trivia: George Mullin is the only 20 game loser to pitch in a World Series in the same season as their 20 losses.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the 4th, Joe Tinker lead off with a single. A sac bunt was followed by a Jimmy Slage rbi single. Slagle stole 2nd and scored on a double off the bat of Jimmy Sheckard. The Tigers banged out 10 hits, 4 by Claude Rossman but were never able to get to Pfiester.

GAME #3 10/10- West Side Grounds, Chicago (Ed Siever vs Ed Reulbach)

Cubs    5

Tigers  1

A 6-hitter from Reulbach and 3 hits and 2 stolen bases from Johnny Evers.

GAME #4 10/11- Bennett Park, Detroit (Orvall Overall vs Bill Donovan)

Cubs    6

Tigers  1

Overall tosses a 5 hitter in the rain, and drives in the winning runs with a single in the 5th.

GAME #4 10/12- Bennett Park, Detroit (Mordecai Brown vs George Mullin)

Cubs    2

Tigers  0

Brown tosses a 7 hit shutout, The Cubs score single runs in the 1st and 2nd. The Tigers score just 1 run over the last 21 innings of this World Series.

1907 Chicago Cubs

NOTE: Heinie Zimmerman appeared in just 5 games in 1907, but actually got an AB in the World Series. Otis, is actually Frank Olis, signed as a reserve catcher on August 11, 1907 but never appeared in a ML game. McCormick is Jack McCormick the Cubs trainer.

The 1907 Chicago Cubs, arguably one of the greatest teams of all time, won 107 games while losing just 45. They started the season winning 23 of their 1st 27 games, good for 2nd place in the NL. Amazingly the Giants put together an early season 17 game winning streak and had a 1 game lead on the Cubs with a 24-3 record. The Cubs continued to win, while the Giants faded to 4th place, 25 1/2 games back .

Offensively the Cubs were good, but not great. Their .250 average is not that impressive but still good for 3rd in the league. Their 571 runs scored was also good for 3rd, while their 235 stolen bases was 2nd in the league. No player on the team hit more than 2 home runs, and the entire team combined for just 13, 7th in the league.

Catcher Johnny Kling was in his 8th season with the Cubs and hit .284. Player/Manager Frank Chance lead the team with a .293 average. Johnny Evers hit .250 with a team leading 46 steals and 2 home runs. Shortstop Joe Tinker hit just .221 but provided solid defense on the front end of Tinker to Evers to Chance. Harry Steinfeldt got left out of the poem, but in his 2nd year with the Cubs he lead the team with 70 rbi, 25 doubles, and 144 hits.

Jimmy Sheckard, Frank “Wildfire” Schulte and Rabbit Jimmy Slagle roamed the outfield for the Cubs. (For my money “Wildfire” is a great nickname). Solly Hofman was a vital part of this team as well, hitting .268 while playing the outfield, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base.

How many people reading this blog would love to be a Frank Olis? Signed to play catcher for the World Champion Cubs, never appearing in a game, and still showing up on the Championship team photo. Misspelled name or not, that’s still pretty cool.

As much credit as Tinker, Evers, and Chance get for the Cub teams of 06, 07, and 08, the gas that made this machine roll was the pitching. The Cubs’ pitching staff put together a 1.73 ERA. Deadball or no deadball that’s an impressive number. The 2nd place Pirates came in at 2.30, a full 1/2 a run higher. The 1.73 ERA is the lowest ever in the history of the game. A record that will never be broken.

Orval Overall(a great baseball name) went 23-7 with a 1.68 ERA. 4th on the team! Mordecai Brown put up a 20-6 with a 1.39 ERA. 3rd on the team! Carl Lundgren, 18-7, 1.17, still good for just 2nd on the team. Jack Pfiester, 14-9, 1.15. The best ERA in the league, but how did he lose 9 games? Ed Reulbach was 5th on the team with a 1.69 ERA. How did he win 17 games with such a lofty ERA?

In the 1907 World Series the Cubs easily handled the Tiger 4-0-1. If the pitching shows up, it could be more of the same in the DMB World Series.

The Tigers make their 1st  of 3 straight World Series appearances under Manager Hughie Jennings. They battled through most of the season fighting off the Cleveland Naps, Chicago White Sox, and finally the Philadelphia A’s. They bested the A’s by a mere 1.5 games with a 92-58 record.

Their .266 team average lead the league, thanks in part to 20 year old Ty Cobb and his league leading .350 average. This is Cobb’s 1st of 11 batting titles. Cobb also lead the league with 119 rbis and 43 stolen bases. They Tigers lead the league with 695 runs scored and 75 triples. Wahoo Sam Crawford paced the team with 17 triples. Crawford just 27 years old was playing in his 9th season. Crawford played in 17 seasons in which he appeared in 100+ games, hitting double digit triples in all 17 seasons, on his way to a Major league leading 309 triples. The Tigers hit just 11 home runs with Cobb hitting 5 of them.

At catcher they had Boss Schmidt, a switch hitter that hit .244. His back ups were the .166 hitting Fred Payne and a soon to be capable catcher with the Cubs, Jimmy Archer. This was his only season with the Tigers, hitting just .119.

Rookie Red Downs hit .219 at second, and Charley O’Leary hit .241 at shortstop. His 112 hits, 19 doubles, 34 rbi, and 61 runs scored were all career highs.

Along with Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb  in the outfield the Tigers had th “Daydream Believer”  Davy Jones. Jones hit .273 with little power, amassing  just  16 extra base hits with 0 home runs. His 101 runs scored were career highs as well as his 30 stolen bases.

Germany Schaeffer hit .258 playing 3rd, short and second.  Matty McIntyre was the #4 outfielder hitting .284 in just 20 games played.

On the mound the Tigers had 3-20 game winners. George Mullin(20-20, 2.59), Ed Killian(25-13, 1.78), and Wild Bill Donovan(25-4, 2.19).  Donovan’s 25 wins matched a career high and it would be his last 20 win season. Ed Killian’s 1.78 ERA was good for 2nd in the league. As a team the Tigers posted a 2.33 ERA, good for 3rd in the AL.

In the 1907 World Series the Tigers went down without putting much of a fight, losing 4-0-1 to the Cubs. I think they may represent themselves a little better in the DMB World Series.
