Yes, more Star Trek. I know, there can never be enough Star Trek in our lives.

This is a 2-for-1 deal involving the ultimate good guy, and the ultimate bad guy. James T. Kirk and Khan Noonien Singh.

About 15 years ago I had a co-worker who said they knew a guy, who knew a guy that could get any Hallmark ornament you might want. I of course wanted the Tinkerbell ornament……….for my daughter…..why would you think it was for me?

hallmark_star_trekBut, the guy who knew a guy, could not get the Tinkerbell ornament, so I asked for the Capt. Kirk ornament. A couple of days before Christmas I received the beauty that you see here. James Tiberius Kirk sitting in the command chair of the Starship Enterprise. I imagine he’s thinking about banging some Orion slave girl, or trying to figure out a new and different way to ignore the Prime Directive. Either way you know he means business. I have never hung this ornament on my tree.

2005-khan About 6 years ago my daughter bought me the Khan ornament for Christmas because she thought Capt. Kirk looked lonely sitting on my bookshelf and he needed someone to talk to.  I didn’t tell her you’re never alone when there’s an Orion slave girl to be had, but I thanked her for the gift anyway. The Khan pictured is from the Original Series episode Space Seed, not the totally buff Khan from The Wrath of Khan.

They stand proudly, side by side on my bookshelf. Occasionally I think I can hear the Kirk ornament cry out Khaaannnnn!!!!! While there have been several times I thought I heard the Khan ornament say, “Smiles everyone, smiles.”  I’m not sure of the reference for that one.

Note: The Philadelphia A’s beat the Chicago Cubs in the actual 1910 World Series in 5 games.

A’S FINISH OFF SWEEP OF CUBS WITH 1 RUN VICTORY

chief-bender-hof-1

Chief Bender was a member of the Ojibwa tribe in Minnesota.

Chief Bender won his 2nd game of the World Series with a 5 hit complete game victory. The A’s scored single runs off King Cole in the 2nd and 3rd inning. Cole was his own worst enemy in the 2nd when he walked the bases loaded, allowing Frank Baker to score on a sac fly from Ira Thomas. Cole would walk 7 in his 8.1 IPs.

The Cubs had a chance to tie the score in the 9th when they had runners on the corners with just 1 out. Pinch hitter Ginger Beaumont grounded to Eddie Collins at 2nd who promptly gunned down Heinie Zimmerman at the plate. Pinch hitter Johnny Kling lined a hard shot that was ticketed for left centerfield, but Jack Barry leaped to make the final out of the series.

Summary: The A’s combo of Coombs and Bender dominated the Cubs batters, allowing just 4 earned runs in the series. Despite having just 5 extra base hits in the series the A’s  made up for that by stealing 12 bases.

The MVP choice is tough. I don’t like giving co-MVPs but both Jack Coombs and Chief Bender were dominant, and they had almost identical stats.

iya_logo2009 was the International Year of Astronomy and to celebrate and honor the 400th anniversary of Galileo and his telescope the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast was started in January of that year. They would feature a 10-12 minute astronomy related podcast each day, that was sent in by people all over the world. Astronomers, physicists, writers, and also people that are none of those. I being none of those, submitted a podcast in January of 2009 and it was accepted and aired on January 27th, 2009. Pretty cool for a baseball geek.

Since the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast was so popular they continued it in 2010 as well as 2011. The podcast dates are reserved months in advance, and occasionally the reserved podcast isn’t sent in in time so they will rebroadcast a favorite from 2009. Surprisingly, they re-aired my podcast on Jupiter’s Great Red Spot.

Check it out, and feel free to leave a comment……hopefully a positive one. I actually managed to mention baseball in this podcast so it won’t be a total waste of time. Also I express some serious man love for Phil Plait and George Hrab, but not to worry, it’s a good clean type of man love. Phil Plait writes the Bad Astronomy blog for discover magazine. If you have any interest in science, astronomy and skepticism you should check it out. George Hrab is a podcaster, musician, and sceptic, that provided the intro music and voice for the 365 Days of Astronomy. Check out George’s Geologic podcast as well, it’s very cool.

Phil Plait, George Hrab, and Capt. Jean Luc Picard are all follicle challenged.  Hmmm……what does that say about me????

Who’s In The Hall Of Fame-Monte Ward

John Montgomery Ward had 108 wins as a pitcher before he turned 21. He is the only player to amass more than 150 wins as a pitcher and more than 2000 hits.  He also won over 400 games as a manager. On June 17, 1880 while pitching for the Providence Grays, he tossed a 5-0 perfect game against Buffalo. In 1882 he beat the Detroit Wolverines 1-0 in 18 innings. The longest complete game shutout ever pitched.

He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1964

NOTE: The Philadelphia A’s won the actual 1910 World Series in 5 games over the Chicago Cubs. This replay is using as played line ups.

THE A’S RUN WILD IN AN EXTRA INNING THRILLER

StrunkAmos

Amos Strunk played on 4 World Championship teams. 3 with the A’s and 1 with the Red Sox.

The Philadelphia A’s stole a DMB World Series record 9 bases against Johnny Kling, but still needed extra innings to beat the Cubs. Amos Strunk stole 3 bases for the A’s, giving him 5 steals for the series.

Wildfire Schulte hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Cubs up 2-1. The A’s tied the game at 2 in the 5th on an rbi single from Amos Strunk. The scoring could have been worse as the A’s stole 4 bases and received 3 walks in the inning.

The Cubs had a chance to win the game in the 9th, with 2 men on , Jimmy Sheckard’s long drive to right was hauled in by Danny Murphy to end the inning.

In the A’s 11th with Jack Pfiester on in relief of  Ed Reulbach the A’s scored the winning run on a 1 out single from Jack Barry, an error by 2nd baseman Heinie Zimmerman, a passed ball and a Stuffy McInnis sac fly.

In the bottom of the 11th Harry Steinfeldt lead off with a long double to center off Eddie Plank. Plank proceeded to walk the next 2 batters to load the bases with nobody out. With the corners playing in, pinch hitter Jimmy Archer grounded to Frank Baker who then threw  home to force Steinfeldt. Jimmy Sheckard popped out and Wildfire Schulte grounded out to end the game.

What’s On My Bookshelf

The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.

UBA

This book was written in 1968 by Robert Coover and is listed as one of the Top 100 sports books by Sports Illustrated. It’s about a lonely accountant that has put together a dice baseball game in which he not only plays the game and keeps the stats, but he also creates the players and the owners, as well as a detailed story revolving around the league. The story picks up while he’s playing his 56th season. 100’s of players have come and gone, 1000’s of games have been played and J. Henry Waugh is about to go off the deep end. But hey, haven’t we all.

Growing up as a precocious yet bashful catholic school boy, I had to find ways to entertain myself that didn’t involve girls, breaking any commandments, or money. That left either interpretive dance or dice baseball. I wisely chose dice baseball, yet I still wonder what might have been?

Even though it was 40 years ago I still remember what some of the dice rolls were. 6/6 was a home run, 4/4 a triple, 3/3 a single all runners advance just 1 base, 2/3 a double all runners score, 4/5 a strikeout, and 2/2 was a double play. Can’t you just feel the excitement?  Every time Bobby Murcer came to bat I shook those dice extra hard, hoping for the 6/6 roll. Sometimes I rolled them more than once for Murcer…..no inning ending DPs for him.

I eventually moved on to other dice games such as Strat-O-Matic and Pursue The Pennant. 10 years ago I purchased   Diamond Mind Baseball and have played it exclusively ever since. It of course is the software that I use to replay the World Series. No dice needed, but when I need a home run I shake the mouse extra fast.

Henry Waugh just goes through the motions at his job, and only feels really alive while playing his game. With a rookie by the name of Damon Rutherford on the mound he rolls the 1st perfect game in the 56 seasons of the UBA. The ultimate high for a dicer. In Rutherford’s next start Henry rolls triple ones, which brings into play the Extraordinary Occurrences Chart. Depending on the next roll there could be a rain out, a brawl, an ejection or any number of extraordinary events. When Henry throws triple ones again it signifies a 3 strikeout inning for the young hurler. After some initial elation Henry realizes that if he throws triple ones a 3rd time in a row, it would be a fatal beaning to the next batter. The next batter happens to be the one and only Damon Rutherford. Henry agonizes over whether or not he should take the chance of rolling the dice with Rutherford batting, and is devastated when he ultimately rolls triple ones once again. The young phenom was dead.

The initials of Henry Waugh’s name are JHW. A reference to Yahweh? Henry was the creator of life. He decided who lived and who died, he decided the ultimate fate of everything he created, but he couldn’t change the result of the roll of a dice. Damon Rutherford had to stay dead. He made his universe, he made the rules, but the dice could not be over ruled.

This book scared me the 1st time I read it. Henry Waugh is a tragic character, slowly spinning into an abyss, brought on by a game, that became an obsession. Like any obsession, whether it be alcohol, drugs, food, beanie babies, or sex, it stops being a choice and it becomes a compulsive dependency, eating away at your mind, body and spirit. Leaving you with nothing except an attic full of worthless beanie babies and a porn collection that your wife won’t let you watch. I mean….that’s what I’ve heard.

Jack Coombs vs Mordecai Brown

JackCoombs Coombs was the baseball coach at Duke University for 14 years

COOMBS OUTDUELS BROWN FOR A GAME 2 WIN

Colby Jack Coombs allowed just a 6th inning unearned run while allowing just 6 hits giving the A’s a game 2 victory and a 2-0 lead in this series.

With the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the 6th Jack Coombs reached on a fielders choice, and advanced to 2nd on Amos Strunk’s 1 out single. With  a slight rain falling down Bris Lord smashed a hard shot over the 3rd base bag for a 2 run double and a 3-1 A’s lead. The lead held up as Coombs allowed just 1 base runner over the last 3 innings.

The Bragging Rights League

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kevin Graham @ 4:23 pm

Jeff Polman has just started his 3rd “blogella”, his word, not mine, entitled The Bragging Rights League. A fantasy baseball adventure using Jeff’s creative mind, and writing skills, all wrapped around the Strat-O-Matic baseball game.

From his blog: The Bragging Rights League is a fictional baseball replay “blogella,” told in 22 weekly chapters posted every Sunday. What if history were flopped on its end, and a team of 1941 white stars were inserted into the thriving, all-black major league for a hotly contested 60-game season? Would Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Bob Feller be able to hold their own against the likes of Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston and Satchel Paige? And what might happen to the players off the field? Heck, let’s find out.

I urge you to check it out. Chapter One: All The Dirt On This Thing has just been posted.

To get a taste of what’s to come, check out his 2 previous blogellas……..huh…the word kind of grows on you: 1924 And You Are There and Play That Funky Baseball.

I’m really looking forward to see what Jeff does with this blogella. It should be quite an adventure.

As a human being I am overwhelmed by the death and destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

As a human being I grieve for those who have died, as well as for their family and friends.

As a human being I grieve for those who are still trapped beneath the rubble, waiting for rescue. Some of who will inevitably die the worst of all possible deaths; panic stricken and hopelessly alone in the dark.

As a human being I am disgusted by the reactions of people like these:

GodBlessAmerica

How does thinking like this exist in the world today?

As an atheist I wonder how believers of a benevolent, loving, supreme being, rationalize events like this. How does a loving god allow this to happen?

As a non believer I wonder how people can bow their head in praise of god for something as insignificant as a groundball single, yet not chastise this same god for earthquakes, birth defects, and child molestation.

As a non believer I am disgusted by people who revel in the misery of others and contribute to the misery of others, simply because they feel it is in the best interests of their religion and their god.

I grieve for these people because I am a free thinking human, unencumbered by religious ideology. We are all human, we should live together, grieve together, and make this world a better place together. Why is that so hard?

GAME #1 10/17/1910 @ Shibe Park Orval Overall vs Chief Bender

Collins_Eddie Eddie Collins has a .333 lifetime average

EDDIE COLLINS LEADS A’S TO GAME 1 VICTORY

Before 27,000 hometown fans had a chance to take their seats at a jam packed Shibe Field they were greeted by the sound of a Jimmy Sheckard bomb off the left center field wall.  Sheckard crushed the 1st pitch he saw from Chief Bender for a lead off double. Bender almost pitched out of the jam, retiring the next 2 batters on easy groundballs, but Manager Frank Chance bounced an rbi single to right to score Sheckard and give the Cubs the early 1-0 lead.

Orvall Overall pitched shut out ball into the 5th inning but it wasn’t easy. Overall gave up 3 walks and 2 singles in the 1st 2 innings, but managed to keep the A’s off the scoreboard. He went to a 3 ball count with virtually every batter in the 1st 2 frames, using 56 pitches. This would come back to hurt him in the later innings.

The A’s tied the score in the 5th when Amos Strunk walked and stole 2nd. He scored on Eddie Collins’ 2 out single.

The Cubs came right back in the 6th, when Wildfire Schulte opened the inning with a single. He stole 2nd on the very 1st pitch to Solly Hofman, and then scored on Hofman’s line drive single.

Entering the 7th inning with a 2-1 lead and having thrown 109 pitches, Overall needed a quick inning. 2 groundball outs and a Chief Bender single was followed by a Bris Lord walk, the 6th off the game for Overall. Eddie Collins doubled in Bender and Lord, and Frank Baker singled in Collins, giving the A’s a 4-2 lead, their 1st lead of the game, and sending an arm weary Overall to the showers.

Chief Bender finished off the Cubs with a 4-hitter for the victory.
