1912 saw both the American League and National League pennants won rather easily by their respective World Series participants. The Boston Red Sox beat out the surprising Washington Senators by 14 games, and the defending champion Philadelphia A’s by 15 games. The 105 Red Sox wins was an American League record, that would not be bested until the 110 wins by the 1927 Yankees. The NY Giants won the NL pennant, their 2nd of 3 straight, by outlasting the Pirates by 10 games. The Cincinnati Reds started the season 22-6, but faded all the way to 4th place, 3 games under .500.
The National League adopted earned run average as an official stat, the American League would not follow suit for several seasons.
Fenway Park opened on April 20th. They beat the soon to be NY Yankees by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings. The Red Sox were scheduled to open Fenway on 4/18 but the game was rained out. The Titanic sunk on 4/19….there is no correlation between the two that I can discern.
During the season the construction of Ebbetts field began. It would open on April 9, 1913. Also, Rube Marquard fashioned a record 19 straight wins, and Chief Wilson will hit a record 36 triples. Heinie Zimmerman of the Chicago Cubs would have and eventually lose a Triple Crown season. Years later a statistical error was found, costing Zimmerman 4 rbis, placing him in 3rd place.
The Boston Red Sox beat the NY Giants in the World Series in 7 games.
Also in baseball:
4/9- The 1st baseball game played at Fenway was played in a snowstorm and saw the Red Sox beat a team from Harvard.
5/13- A Western Union telegraph operator by the name of Lou Proctor inserted his name as a pinch hitter in the game account of the Browns/Red Sox game.(A Walk). His name would appear in the 1st Edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia.
5/15- While playing the Highlanders at Hilltop Park, Ty Cobb charges into the stands after a heckler, attempting to beat him senseless. He would be suspended.
5/18- In a show of solidarity the Tigers refuse to play a game against the Browns. A group of replacement players lead by seminary student Aloyisius Travers lose 24-2.
6/13- Christy Mathewson wins his 300th game.
8/20- Jay Cashion(Wash) throws a 6 inning no hitter against Cleveland.
8/30- Earl Hamilton(STL) no hits the Tigers.
9/6- Rookie Jeff Tesreau(BKL) no hits the Phillies.
The United States Baseball League began play on May 1, 1912. This attempt to form a 3rd Major League lasted just 1 month. A 2nd attempt in 1913 met with equal success. It was an 8 team league that featured teams such as the Pittsburg Filipinos, and the Cincinnati Pippins.
