Before replaying the 1907 World Series let’s take a look at what really happened when the Detroit Tigers played the Chicago Cubs in the 4th World Series.
West Side Grounds during the 1907 World Series
The Cubs had won 107 games while the Tigers had won 92 during the regular season. The Cubs had by far the better pitching and a smarter more experienced offense. It showed in the World Series. The Cubs ran all over Tiger catcher Boss Schmidt, stealing 15 bases during the series, including 7 in game 1, a World Series record against a single catcher. Schmidt hit just .167 as well, not a World Series to tell your grand kids about. Ty Cobb hit just .200 with no stolen bases, a lackluster showing from the 20 year old batting champion.
4 different Cub pitchers won games, Brown, Pfiester, Reulbach and Overall, while combining for a miniscule ERA of 0.75.
GAME #1 10/8- West Side Grounds, Chicago (Bill Donovan vs Orval Overall)

The Cubs and Overall took a 1-0 lead into the 8th inning. With 1out Davey Jones singled and immediately stole 2nd. Joe Tinker booted a Germany Schaefer groundball putting runners on the corners. A Sam Crawford single and a sac fly scored 3 runs, putting the Tigers up 3-1.
In the Cubs 9th, Frank Chance lead off with a single, and Harry Steinfeldt was hit by a pitch. An error loaded the bases with just one out, a groundout made the score 3-2. Donovan struck out pinch hitter Del Howard, but the pitch got away from catcher Boss Schmidt to allow the tying run to score. Johnny Evers was thrown out trying to steal home plate to end the inning.
After 3 scoreless innings the game was called because of darkness.
GAME #2 10/9- West Side Grounds, Chicago(George Mullin vs Jack Pfiester )
Some trivia: George Mullin is the only 20 game loser to pitch in a World Series in the same season as their 20 losses.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the 4th, Joe Tinker lead off with a single. A sac bunt was followed by a Jimmy Slage rbi single. Slagle stole 2nd and scored on a double off the bat of Jimmy Sheckard. The Tigers banged out 10 hits, 4 by Claude Rossman but were never able to get to Pfiester.
GAME #3 10/10- West Side Grounds, Chicago (Ed Siever vs Ed Reulbach)
A 6-hitter from Reulbach and 3 hits and 2 stolen bases from Johnny Evers.
GAME #4 10/11- Bennett Park, Detroit (Orvall Overall vs Bill Donovan)
Overall tosses a 5 hitter in the rain, and drives in the winning runs with a single in the 5th.
GAME #4 10/12- Bennett Park, Detroit (Mordecai Brown vs George Mullin)
Brown tosses a 7 hit shutout, The Cubs score single runs in the 1st and 2nd. The Tigers score just 1 run over the last 21 innings of this World Series.
